(2) - for your non-medical types, the match is the process by which you apply to a bunch of programs, spend your life savings interviewing all over the country, then submit your ranking of the programs. meanwhile, the programs submit their rankings of the applicants, and the computer spits out which program you're going to - take it or leave it. in between is a lot of politics, false advertising, brown-nosing, etc.
